1. Definition
Definition (Fisher Information). Given a random sample from a distribution with pdf . Accordingly, calculate the joint pdf / likelihood function and take the logarithm to get the log-likelihood function:
Then the Fisher Information of is defined as
2. Identity Between the Two Forms
Proof of the last equation
For pdf of , . Take the derivative with respect to on both sides:
Take the derivative with respect to again on both sides:
Recall the Fisher trick:
The term can be written as
Thus,
Note: Fisher information conventions
There are several ways to define Fisher Information.
- The first one is derived directly from the pdf of a distribution, i.e. the population distribution.
- The second way is to view it from a sampling perspective. Then is replaced by the likelihood function , or regarded as the pdf of the joint distribution.
In the likelihood convention,
The two definitions are essentially equivalent, as the likelihood function is just the pdf of the sample:
Thus for Fisher Information,
We have to pay attention to the dimension or meaning of the function when calculating Fisher Information, and we have to be consistent. Usually, the log-likelihood function is used in practice.
